Baby Shark
Back in 2017 sometime, we were having dinner out with old friends when one of them asked our girls “have you heard that Baby Shark song?” Cue blank stares and raised eyebrows as said friend (grown man) began giving us a rendition, replete with actions.
Despite our initial ignorance we began noticing this catchy little tune was catching on all around us and now, two years later, this infectious little ditty has entered the Billboard Top 40, and was recently called “possibly the most popular song in the world“, “2018’s biggest meme” and “a viral cultural phenomenon of our times“. Amassing billions of online views and inspiring global dance challenges, a huge range of merchandise, a live musical and a movie in the pipeline – Baby Shark is truly a fascinating product of social media serendipity and marketing genius.
So as diligent creators of kids YouTube entertainment we’ve naturally jumped on the Baby Shark bandwagon and made our own #babysharkchallenge dance video too. It’ll be fun for them to remember this craze when they’re all grown up!
All the graphics and animations for our video were drawn on our iPad using Procreate and Sketchbook Motion – two apps which the girls love and are highly recommended if you’re trying to direct screen time toward creative pursuits. We’ve only just discovered Sketchbook Motion and are in awe at how it can turn a little fish drawing into a shoal of animated fish with a single stroke. Pretty amazing stuff – and this video was a really fun project to explore using it!
I heard baby shark for the first time a month ago in Pretoria, where a team of teachers used it for a warmup activity. Your girls made a much better animation of it than the guys whose video the teachers used! Good to hear about the apps. I’m familiar with Procreate, but will definitely try Scetchbook Motion as well.
