The Very Hungry Caterpillar: Singapore Edition
Ever wondered what The Very Hungry Caterpillar would have been eating if he had been born in Singapore? Well, just in case this very question has been keeping you up at night, we’ve remixed a fresh animated version of this classic children’s book – The Very Hungry Caterpillar: Singapore Edition!
I’ve always loved the iconic illustrations Eric Carle produced for his picture books, and having a go at his collage-style artwork (digitally) during our recent foray into learning Procreate has been a hit with the kids. Procreate has also recently added a new feature which allows users to animate their drawings, and it’s wonderfully straightforward for kids to pick up.
So we decided to put some of our illustrations to good use and produce this mash-up animation project to celebrate both the 50th birthday of this well-loved story, as well as Singapore’s 54th birthday coming up in August! This year also marks Singapore’s Bicentennial celebrations, being the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore. And coincidentally, next week is also the start of the Singapore Food Festival. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is definitely a story that celebrates birthdays and food.
Our storyline follows the same journey as the original but is set in Singapore, so this little caterpillar gets to eat through some exotic fruits and some of our favourite local treats (on the Saturday)! Miss Chu also mixes in a bit of Singlish slang since this is, after all, a little Singaporean caterpillar.
We had lots of fun choosing the foods, illustrating them and scripting the story. Hope you enjoy it!
